Description | He thanks Herschel for the beautiful book sent by Macmillan. He has only glanced at it but he is sure his anticipations will be verified. He is in London and has asked his publisher to send the two volumes of the second edition of his Chapman's 'Iliad'. There are only 100 copies of the three other volumes, containing 'The Odyssey' and 'Hymns' and he will send the next edition once reprinted. The first edition of 'The Iliad' was printed in 1857, before any rage for Homeric translations, and it was reprinted last year. 'The Odyssey' has been slower, and should not require a second edition before Christmas. Professor [John] Conington of Oxford sent him 'The Aeneid' on the morning that he received Herschel's letter. He has used Walter Scott's metre, which is questionable. |
