TitleLetter from G [George Murray] Smith, 45 Pall Mall, to Sir John F W [Frederick William] Herschel
CreatorSmith; George Murray (1824-1901); British publisher, businessman, and founder of the Dictionary of National Biography
Date24 March 1862
DescriptionSmith encloses a proof in triplicate from Herschel's manuscript [of Book 1 of 'The Iliad']. The introduction arrived that morning and a proof will be sent tomorrow or Wednesday. They have adopted italics after experiment, as no other type was so suitable. Smith thinks that Herschel has settled the question of the English hexameter. He read the work aloud, and as he does not read well it was a severe test.
