Title | Letter from J [John] Herschel, to 'Dear Pater' [John Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | n.d. [1857?] |
Description | He acknowledges the half banknote, giving its correct number. The notion of brethren dwelling together in perfect unity is good, he thinks, noting two services. It has been an exciting day, with one company leaving for Aldershot, with two coming in to be filled and sent to India. It seem odd that the Royals [Engineers] are going to India and the EICs [East India Company] are staying at home. Their turn will come and he thinks that in another year, he will be leaving England. He asks if his father has seen the peculiar vessel drawn in the Illustrated London News, about which there is a considerable amount of 'bosh'. He discusses sail and steam power and asks if Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel] had read it and what he thinks. |
