Title | Letter from J [John] Herschel, Brompton Barracks, to 'Dear Mama' [Margaret Brodie Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 4 October 1857 |
Description | It has been raining hard all day and he will attempt a letter but finds it hard to put his thoughts down. They have been heaping him with letters and he has hardly replied. He notes the importance of news from these sources. He leaves it in Alick's hands [Alexander Stewart Herschel] to tell him whether to come to town or not. He asks if he is inconveniencing his father by keeping something which would make an awkward postal parcel. He is feeling well, but is weak. Two companies of sappers have started for India, with a dinner for the officers the night before. He saw several fellows making fools of themselves. He gives messages for family members and gives thanks for the portrait. |
