Title | Letter from J [John] Herschel, Chatham, to 'Dear Papa' [John Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 12 November 1857 |
Description | He received his father's letter yesterday, but could not acknowledge it immediately, as his father likes. Yesterday was the first fine day they have had and he was obliged to triangulate with the theodolite. Despite the weather he has managed to pass the time well and has recently gained access to the laboratory and is trying analysis. He asks what the chief uses of hyposulphite of soda are in analysis. He describes the laboratory and feels shockingly ignorant, but is practising. He has plenty of books so he should make some way. He has questions for his sisters and concludes with 'Hurrah for Lucknow'. |
