Title | Letter from J H [John Herschel], Dehra, to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 18 December 1862 |
Description | He intended to write a letter to make up for his long silence, but he has written nonsense which he has torn up, starting again so that she has something rather than nothing. He expects Willy [William James Herschel] to be with him within a week. He will have left Calcutta [Kolkata] two days ago. It will soon be Christmas and the last time he spent Christmas Day under a roof was at Chatham, so this one should make amends. He is thinking of them all in the old dining room, but he does not want to dwell on such subjects, especially as he realises Willy will have to leave. He concludes by wishing them a merry Christmas. |
