Title | Letter from William James Herschel, Calcutta [Kolkata], to 'Dearest Papa' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge |
Date | 5 March 1853 |
Description | He is safe and with 'Uncle Duncan [Stewart] and Aunt'. He has been at examination, detained for longer than he expected. He began duties by reporting himself on 3 March. William despatched his letters of introduction and attended a ball at Mrs Prinsep's. He dined with Sir J [James William] Colville and received good advice from his sister. He passed preliminary examinations that morning in five languages. His uncle wants him to go to Burma {Myanmar], but William has an appointment in the North West. Colville disapproves of his uncle's plan as that country must be under military occupation for some years and younger men will not go there first. He intends to buy a buggy or riding horse and has three servants with the prospect of more. |
