Description | It is two months since he has heard from home and looks forward to the post at Cairo, if not for Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel]. He is within 24 hours of Suez and he speculates that if Alick has reached Alexandria, he will certainly get the train to Suez since the steamer is telegraphed as being in sight. William has lost enough time to make him anxious, as the steamer 'Bengal' broke its screw shaft and spent a fortnight in the rolling Bay of Bengal. They were near to being a wreck, the ship hanging on by a weak cable during a cyclone. William spent the time reading letters sent from home since 1853 and describes his feelings for them. His clothes, guns and library had all been left behind by accident and he will travel light across France. He describes his health and hopes to arrive at Collingwood in 'walking condition' after his travels. [From 28 July] No news from Alick and he supposes he will not see him at Cairo or Alexandria. He comments on the loveliness of the Red Sea, its tints and atmosphere. |
