TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Dacca [Dhaka], to 'Dearest Father' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date24 May 1869
DescriptionHe notes the Queen's birthday, and they now have a son, who arrived a day early, just before midnight on 22 May. Emma's confinement was easier and they are now thinking about names, possibly 'John Charles William'. He mentions his daughter, Emma Dorothea's reaction and the weight of the baby. He asks that notes are sent to Alex [Alexander Stewart Herschel] and Uncle Charles. In a postscript, William states that there has been another cyclone, describing its effects briefly, including the drowning of boatmen, but concluding that 'it was nothing like the cyclone of 1864'. In a second postscript he laments that letters from Collingwood arrive after other telegrams, letters and newspapers.
