In a less formal postscript, Hardcastle notes that Sir David Gill is asking about the telescope making volumes, and if they are at Slough. Gill wrote the Encylopaedia Britannica article on telescopes, which said little about William Herschel. Hardcastle could not see the comet [Halley's Comet] on Friday, even though the sky was clear; Sir Robert Ball could not see it either. |
