TitleLetter from J A [Joseph Alfred] Hardcastle, The Dial House, Crowthorne, Berkshire, to 'Dear Uncle Willie' [Sir William James Herschel]
CreatorHardcastle; Joseph Alfred (1868-1917); British astronomer
Date29 May 1910
DescriptionHardcastle writes as Secretary of the Joint Committee to consider the question of reprinting Sir William Herschel's published works. The committee wishes to produce a biographical preface, and have the help of Dr Dreyer. He asks if Dreyer may be provided with manuscripts for use in a possible preface. In a less formal postscript, Hardcastle notes that Sir David Gill is asking about the telescope making volumes, and if they are at Slough. Gill wrote the Encylopaedia Britannica article on telescopes, which said little about William Herschel. Hardcastle could not see the comet [Halley's Comet] on Friday, even though the sky was clear; Sir Robert Ball could not see it either.
