TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Jungipoor [Jangipur], to 'My dearest Father' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date3 July 1857
DescriptionWilliam wishes to make a small present to Nicholas Stewart, since he and his father have been very kind to William while he has been there and William expects to leave soon. He wants to have a telescope, as near to Mr. Dawes's as possible. He describes this and asks that no unnecessary expense be made in the fittings, with priority to be give to the glass. He queries the value of the Utzschneider in Smith Elder's bill. He thinks that the telescope with carriage costs should be not be more than £8.00, but if the choice would improve matters, he would not mind paying that amount for the instrument alone. Mr Dawes's telescope has been much admired. He knows that Stewart will appreciate the gift. He encloses an exact description to save his father in writing to instrument makers.
