Dr Jurin, Mr Witton and Mr Smith Professors of Astronomy at Cambridge had leave to be present at the present Meeting of the Society.
The minutes of the last day were read.
A New map of Northumberland ny Mr Warburton was received as a present to the Society from the Author.
Mr Amiand gave the Society some Account of a monstrous birth viz that it had two heads, two Spines entire with the Ossa Sacra, the internal Ribs being common to both Spines, three Scapulae, one in the middle of the back of an imperfect form, the other two perfect Supporting the Arm, which as also the ossa mimomimata [?] and lower parts were as in Common Subjects. It was a female had two hearts in one [? illegible] a pair of Lungs a Stomack, but the Intestines proceeding from them soon united in one common Jejimmum [?] there was but one Liver, tho' two gall bladders with their proper ducts, 2 pancreas's etc. Mr Ammiand promised to give the Society a more particular Account of this matter in writing and did hope he shoukld be able to get Possession of the Subject which at present is shewed for a Sight.
Dr Halley produced a Paper of his own containing a very elegant and easy method for determining the time when the Planet Venus will appear with the greatest brightness.
He likewise gave notice that Jupiter will pass over two fixt Stars (the same which Gassendus observed him to pass very near 83 years ago) the 21 of November in the night and 11 of January in the Evening.
Part of a Letter was read from Mr Geoffroy the Younger to Sir Hans Sloane, relating to this Paper which was part of it read the last meeting concerning Sal Ammonia. He says likewise that they have now got a Method of making the burning Powder of all Sorts of inflamable materials, E.G. Of flower of wheat 1 part and three parts of Alum.
Sir Hans Sloane and Mr Hill produced a proposal for the disposing of the moneys arising from a Legacy of Sir Godfrey Copleys wherein they are left Trustees which was referred to the Consideration of the next Council.
Mr Foulks proposed Mr Willliams to be a Member of the Society. ' |
