Read extracts from the Council of 4 January 1768 regarding various statutes regarding election duty, salary of Clerk, Librarian, Keepr of the Repository, Housekeeper etc. Read applications of the four candidates for the place of Clerk of the Society, Mr John Robertson, FRS for 26 years, Mr George Percy FRS, Mr Thomas Green Clerk ot Mr Kirkby Sollicitor of the Socity, and Alexander Thomson MD and reported on their interviews. Assessed on their handwriting; their knowledge of languages; their acquaintance with natural history; their skill in mathematics and mechanics; their conversation in Libraries and books; and the sufficiency of the security they were able to provide. Candidates called in and asked if they had anything to add. Afterwards the Society ' proceeded to the election of a Clerk ', [method described in detail] Mr John Robertson received the most votes (98) and coming before the members asked for his name to be removed from the List of Fellows, and named for his securities Mr William Mountaine and Mr John Nourse Bookseller in the Strand. Took the oath of an officer.
Lord Charles Cavendish, Andrew Coltee Ducarel LLD and Samuel Dyer Esq were balloted and elected as Inspectors for the Library, and Mr Henry Baker and Mr William Hudson for the Repository |
