| Description | Professor Gardiner and Sir John Vane first met in the 1960s, when they worked together at the Department of Pharmacology at the Royal College of Surgeons. Later, Professor Gardiner became Chair at the University of Singapore's Department of Pharmacology, where Sir John Vane acted as Examiner for a time, and it is evident that the two men held each other in high regard, also developing a personal friendship.
