| Description | These are Certificates of candidature which have lapsed without the candidate being elected to the Fellowship. This situation may occur as a result of the certificate being suspended for seven elections without renewal, or the renewal and updating of a certificate (Statute 10), or the death of a candidate, or the withdrawal of the certificate for other reasons. Many lapsed certificates relate to candidates who become Fellows at a later date, and are therefore of some biographical significance. They include candidates for Foreign Fellowship. Some candidates are proposed but are found to be ineligible for various reasons, such as nationality.
'Suspended' refers to the original practice of hanging the certificates for all Fellows of the Society to see and if they so wished to add themselves as additional proposers. All candidates are reviewed by the various committees annually.
All certificates are printed templates, to which the details are added either by hand, or using a typewriter. Where they are handwritten they are described in the format field as 'manuscript', and where typewritten are described as 'typescript'.
The date of the certificate is the date it was first presented to the Society. |
