| Description | According to his promise he sends the enclosed [meteorological observations], vouching for the accuracy of observations made by Martin and his brother. He regrets that he did not have a barometer which matched Roberton's, and he had hoped that Roberton might select one for him. He asks if the annexed observations are of any use, and if Sir James Clark presented one of Martin's meteorological journals for the [Royal] Society as he promised to do.
With a table of hourly meteorological observations [pp.3-4] made from 6.00am on 21 March and ending at 5.00am on 22 March 1842 [March equinox]. Columns for the hour, barometer and attendant thermometer, outdoor thermometer, hygrometer and attached thermometer, wind direction and general weather remarks. Notes below the table state that 'The Barometer and attendant Thermometer are placed in a hall at a distance of about 6 feet from the ground and are but little acted upon by artificial temperature...The Hygrometer is placed out of doors in a western aspect under a verandah & at the same level. The External Thermometer faces the North and is placed entirely away from any house and in an exposed place...'. Endorsed [p.2]: '1842. March 21 & 22 at Ventnor, Isle of Wight'. |
