DescriptionHe sends his last hourly observations, supposing that Johnson has not yet returned to town. He hopes that Johnson will be in good health and will have enjoyed his excursion.

With a table headed [p.1]: 'Observations made in Latitude 52" 36" 12" N Longde. 6" 58 E. Commencing at 9AM and ending at 9PM September 21st 1840' [September equinox]. A second table [p.3] is headed: 'Pressure of the Atmosphere observed for 12 successive Hours Commencing at 9AM and ending at 9PM (Mean Time) June 22nd 1840' [June solstice]. Columns for the hours of mean time, portable barometer, attached thermometer, external thermometer, hygrometer, wind direction and general weather remarks.

Inscribed [p.1]: 'Recd. of Captain Johnson Dec 23 + 1840 J.F.W.H. [John Frederick William Herschel]. For communication to the Phy. Committee R.S.'. A similar inscription appears on p.3. Endorsed [p.6]: 'Mr. Utting's Obsns. for the Physical Committee R.S.'
