DescriptionComputations of tides, based upon original 18th century observations made by William Hutchinson, Dock Master at Liverpool, then in Lancashire, and later calculated by Jenkin Jones. The volume has a table of contents [pp.9-11]. The data commences with sets of tables [pp.14-196], headed 'Horizontal parallax', with abbreviations AU [Ante Meridian Upper Transit], AL [Ante Meridian Lower Transit] PU [Post Meridian Upper Transit] and PL [Post Meridian Lower Transit]. There is a key to the abbreviations used [p.3]. Each table has columns for date, Moon's transit, time and height of high water, Moon's declination and declination of the Sun.

This is followed by tables of results numbered 17-22 [pp.201-215] and four diagrams, designated as plates 6-7 [pp.223-229].

The original observations by Hutchinson are noted in the paper 'Discussion of tide observations made at Liverpool', by John William Lubbock, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, v.125 (1835), pp.275-299. Some of the tables appear in that paper.

The volume commences with the note [p.1 by John William Lubbock]: 'The observations of the Tides were made at Liverpool by Mr. Wm. Hutchinson Dock Master and were presented by him to the Library of that place. The calculations contained in this book were made by Mr. Jenkin Jones under Mr. Lubbock's directions, the expense being defrayed out of a grant of money placed at Mr. Lubbock's disposal by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. 26 Feb. 1837'.
