Description | Daily records of the weather at Fort William [Kolkata], taken at varying times, most often two records per day, morning and afternoon. Columns for date and time, barometer, hygrometer [not completed], thermometer inside and outside [kept only occasionally], kind and quantity of clouds, wind direction and force, rain, and miscellanous remarks. Rainfall totals are carried over and totalled per month. The observations show some local variations in location, several [for example p.6] marked 'Fort' and 'Gardens', or [p.8] 'at Dum Dum'. From 11 April 1788 onwards many of the observations are 'On the River', with locations ranging from Diamond Harbour, to Hidjelee Creek, and returning to 'At the Gardens' [p.13]. This journeying recommences on 22 April [p.15]. On 6 May [p.21] 'I felt the effect of a returning stroke of Electricity, or an Earthquake...as if something had struck the Ship's bottom...'. |
