A note [p.25] for Friday 26 December 1806 states: 'The above is the Highest Tide since I took account of them first in August 1801 - W.P.'.
The method of gathering this data is noted In the paper 'On the tides of the Port of London', by John William Lubbock, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, v.121 (1831) pp.379-415. 'at the entrance to the London Docks; the time of high water, or the time when the water has just made its mark, is there noted on a slate by the watchman on the pier-head, generally only to the nearest five minutes; this is afterwards copied in a book kept for the purpose by Mr. Peirse'.
