DescriptionTidal measurements recorded at Wapping, Middlesex. Columns for day and date of observation, low water mark, high water mark (both in feet and inches), time of low water, time of high water (both hours and minutes), Moon's age, wind direction, with general weather remarks.

A note on the inner front board reads: 'Book No.9. Register of Tides. Taken at the Entrance Lock of the London Docks at Wapping. Account for the years 1827. 1828. 1829,. 1830. 1831. being a continuation of the Account of Tides commencing August 1801. The Books No.1 to No.8 were presented to the Royal Society by order of J. Solly Esqre. at whose House they are lodged'. A note in pencil below this reads: 'This entry made by some person while the Book was out of my possession.. Wm. Peirce'. There is an added slip of paper [pp.120/121] referring to an observation made on 14 November 1831, apparently on part of a letter cover addressed 'Captn. Walton'.

The method of gathering this data is noted In the paper 'On the tides of the Port of London', by John William Lubbock, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, v.121 (1831) pp.379-415. 'at the entrance to the London Docks; the time of high water, or the time when the water has just made its mark, is there noted on a slate by the watchman on the pier-head, generally only to the nearest five minutes; this is afterwards copied in a book kept for the purpose by Mr. Peirse'.

The front board is inscribed: 'Tide Book No.9'. Stamped [p.1]: 'The Royal Society of London'. Inscribed, front inner board; 'New Catalogue 139'.
