TitleLetter from Jonas Hanway, Salisbury, to 'Sir' [Shute Barrington?]
CreatorHanway; Jonas (bap.1712 d.1786); British merchant and philanthropist
Barrington; Shute (1734-1826); British Bishop of Durham
Date13 October 1784
DescriptionHanway is in his seventy-third year with 'many intimations of mortality'. After years of public office, service, and writing books on police and morals, he cannot help acting in favour of the country under the auspices of the Marine Society. The plan contained here [not present] should give the proper class of people a fit education at the right time to predispose them to maritime matters. It may render them sober enough to take care of themselves and inbibe honest principles. Now, in time of peace, it is time to consult how to defend in wartime. He asks that if his correspondent approves of the design, he should exert himself in its execution. He notes a Marine Society paper towards the same end.
