TitleObservations of the Sun's azimuth at Cape Adare, Antarctica and elsewhere, largely by Louis Bernacchi
CreatorBernacchi; Louis Charles (1876-1942); Belgian-born Australian physicist
Colbeck, William (1871-1930); British Antarctic explorer
Date3 August 1898-8 April 1900
DescriptionTables of observations made at Cape Adare, East Antarctica. The set begins with a single sheet of observations made at Kew Observatory [p.1], presumably for calibration. They conclude with observations made '14 due West of Coulman Island' [p.15], and at Stewart Island, New Zealand [p.17]. Each sheet contains initial information on the date, observing station, latitude and longitude, chronometer type and error at station. The main tables record times of the Sun's transit, bearings of the Sun and a fixed mark, with sums and means, followed by calculations concluding with the value for azimuth of the mark.

Made during the British Antarctic Expedition 1898-1900 [the Southern Cross Expedition] led by Captain Carsten Borchgrevink.

Each recto sheet is headed 'Observations of Sun's azimuth' and is marked 'K.O. Mag. Form F.' [Kew Observatory]. The observer is noted on each sheet, all signed by Louis Bernacchi with one exception [p.13] signed by William Colbeck. Some verso pages have pencilled notes and calculations.
Extent1 volume; 104p. [only pp.1-17 have been used, the remainder are blank or not used]
