DescriptionHourly meteorological observations for a twenty-five hour period, commencing at noon on 21 March and ending at noon the following day Spring equinox], kept aboard HMS Britomart in the Atlantic Ocean. Columns record: time of observation, barometer, attached thermometer, ship's position by latitude and longitude, wind direction and strength, weather and general remarks.

A note below the title states that: 'The Barometer was constructed by Mr. Cox of Devonport, and compared with his Standard before bringing it on board, where it was placed in the Cabin Skylight with the cistern about two feet above the water line...'. A further note identifies the hygrometer as a Mason's instrument.

Headed [p.1]: 'Meteorological Observations made on board H.M.S. Britomart at Sea March 21st 1838 by Lieut Stanley'. Signed: 'Owen Stanley Lieut & Commander'. Stamped: 'Hydrog: Office 5 AU 40'. Endorsed [p.2]: Britomart Meteorological Observations 21st March 1838' and in red ink 'Rec. 23 June'.
