Description | Daily meteorological observations from Halifax in Yorkshire, listed by date and time. Single barometer observations, usually at 7am or 8am: with morning and evening thermometer readings, notes on wind direction and strength, general remarks on weather, rain in inches, and hygrometer degrees. These observations follow the new style calendar, with the table of annual means from the barometer, thermometer and rainfall figures, January-December 1727 [p.28].
The manuscript follows the format recommended in the paper: 'Invitatio ad observationes meteorologicas communi consilio instituendas', by James Jurin, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, v.32 (1723), pp.422-427.
The front cover is inscribed 'A Diary of ye Weather &c. at Hallifax; for the Year of our Lord 1727'. There is an endorsement [p.30]: 'read March 7th 1727'. The Royal Society's Journal Book for the meeting of 7 March 1728 records that: 'Dr. Jurin communicated a letter from Dr. Nettleton to himself dated at Hallifax Febry. 19th 1727/8. Together wth. an Account of the persons inoculated for the Smallpox by him the last year and a Journal of the weather for the same...from Jany. 1 1726/7 to Decr. 31: 1727'. [JBO/14 pp.191-192]. |
