TitleMeteorological observations kept at Port Essington, Australia, on board HMS Alligator, by James John Gordon Bremer
CreatorBremer; Sir James John Gordon (1786-1850); British naval officer
Date7 December 1838-28 February 1839
DescriptionDaily meteorological observations, usually of six per day, noting barometric pressure, temperature in two locations, wind force and direction. No location is given for the vessel, and there are no entries in columns for latitude and longitude, current force and direction, and compass variations, suggesting that the ship remained at anchor during this period, at the last position given in MA/97/1. The manuscript contains no additional remarks.

The later manuscript in the series [MA/97/4] gives the fixed location as Victoria Settlement, Port Essington, now in the Northern Territory of Australia. The settlement was established by Sir John James Gordon Bremer in 1838, during this visit.

Headed: 'Abstract Log and Meteorological Register Her Majesty's Ship "Alligator" Captain Sir J.J. Gordon Bremer C.B. K.C.H. Captain. February 7th 1838 and 28th Febry. 1839'. With the stamp of the Royal Navy's Hydrographer's Office, dated 5 August 1840. Signed [p.7] by J.J. Gordon Bremer.
