DescriptionInforms of his efforts to manufacture saccharimeters and other polarisation apparatus to replace the German monopoly existing prior to the war. He believes his to be an improvement on the German type, and is conducting experiments to further enhance it. Requests financial assistance from the Royal Society to continue his research work, particularly to develop an interferometer-type instrument for producing quartz wedges with greater accuracy.

1) Letter from W.J Pope, The Chemical Laboratory, The University, Cambridge, to Dr [James Charles] Philip, Sectional Committee, Royal Society
Describes his initial investigations into saccharimeters since the beginning of the war, highlighting the difficulties encountered in construction and calibration. Explains the modifications made to improve the instruments' accuracy and performance, including shortening the compensating wedge and using a modified Poynting plate for the "half-shadow." Requests financial support to continue his research and address further challenges in instrument construction.

2) Letter from James [Charles] Philip, Assistant Secretary, Sectional Chemical Committee, to [Robert] Harrison
Acknowledges neglecting a previous letter regarding the application of Messrs. Bellingham and Stanley for assistance in saccharimeter research. Expresses support for encouraging the manufacture of saccharimeters in the country and suggests that the Royal Society assist the firm if they are serious about the endeavor.

3) Letter from James [Charles] Philip, Assistant Secretary, Sectional Chemical Committee, to [Robert] Harrison
Forwards a letter from Professor Pope of Cambridge, endorsing Messrs. Bellingham and Stanley's application for help in saccharimeter research. Emphasises the importance of considering the application favourably.
