Date | 11 April 1916 |
Description | Addressing Sir Joseph Thomson personally on account of having been on the Athenaeum Committee with him, juging the topic he is writing about to be of mutual interest. States that there is a growing feeling that the time has come when the leading scientific and learned societies should reconsider their attitude towards "alien enemies" whoa re on their roll of honorary members. Offers the approach taken by the Hellenic Society as an example. Referring to the infamy of the Wittenberg Camp, revealed to him on the previous day, strengthens the conviction that no English society should continue to honour representatives of a nation or nations which can descent to such depth without any protest from the educated classes. Informs he has been in correspondence with Dr Walter Leaf who agrees with him that the Council must discuss the question again but both feel that if possible the leading societies should agree on common action, calling on the Royal Society to arrange a meeting for this purpose.
Includes an internal Royal Society Memorandum dated 19 April 1919. |
