TitleLetter from A M [Arthur Mannering] Tyndall, University of Bristol, Bristol, to Sir Alfred Egerton
CreatorTyndall; Arthur Mannering (1881-1961); British physicist
RecipientEgerton; Sir; Alfred Charles Glyn (1886-1959); British chemist
Date21 July 1947
DescriptionNoting the attention directed to an article by C F [Cecil Frank] Powell, giving evidence for the existence of a new particle in cosmic ray processes. Following several conferences he reports that the general agreement is that Powell is right, and 'additional evidence is accumulating so rapidly that the matter will be clinched in a second Nature letter shortly'. He states that pre-war a new particle was uncoverered at the Royal Society, but 'unavoidable delays in publication have forced us to use a weekly periodical to secure priority', which he also states was a move governed by national interest, 'as we can be sure that the Americans are close on our heels in this field'. He reports that some recent plates exposed at 18,000 on the Andes 'are so rich in material that we can look forward to a spate of results during the long vacation'. He suggests inviting Powell to give a lecture at the Society in November and he is certain that there will be further original work to include by then. He feels sure that in the pre-war days this is the action that Rutherford would have taken. He is sure that Blackett and Oliphant would support this proposal.
