Description | He reports that with the aid of the Royal Society grant, he has been able to visit Madrid and to study the Malvaceae of [Antonio Jose] Cavarilles which form the types of his monograph of 1790. Baker has been endeavouring to work out the genera and species of this large order of plants, which are in a confused state. It was of primary importance that he should see the types of Cavarilles. This has helped in clearing up the nomenclature and has extended his knowledge of the species and their range. The results of the study will enable his further contributions to knowledge of the Malvaceae.
William Carruthers was awarded a grant of £15 from the Royal Society's Donation Fund in November 1891, 'in aid of Mr. E. J. Baker's visit to the Herbaria of Madrid and Geneva'. |
