TitleLetter from George Jennings Hinde, Avondale Road, Croydon, to [Henry] Woodward
Date12 October 1891
DescriptionHe has just finished a paper on the sponge remains in the Lower Tertiary strata of Oamaru and asks for Woodward's advice on the best means of getting it published. The paper describes a variety of minute spicular forms belonging to the sponges and not known hitherto in fossils. The text would occupy about 50-60 octavo pages, while the illustrations, which he has hand-drawn, would be 9 octavo plates. To have them lithographed would cost about £40-£50 and this expense is a hindrance to getting the paper in print. The Geological Society would not make such an outlay on a simple paper. He asks if there would be any possibility of obtaining a grant from the Royal Society for the plates.

Henry Woodward was awarded a grant of £40 from the Royal Society's Donation Fund in December 1891, 'to assist Dr. Hinde in illustrating his Memoir on sponge remains from the Lower Tertiary strata of Oamaru, New Zealand'.
