Description | Primarily comprises of correspondence relating to the Royal Society's awards from the Darwin Research Fund, with an application made by Leonard Harrison Matthews for travel expenses to allow Dr. E.W. van Lennep, University College of Khartoum, to visit the Royal Veterinary College, London, in prepartion to investigate the biological materials generated by a planned destruction of game in Southern Sudan between February and April 1955.

Includes discussion of: previous work in Southern Sudan by Dr. Lorna Kellas during the destruction to game as part of the campaign against the Tsetse fly and the opportunity provided by the next planned destruction of game; a request that the matter be considered by Council on 16 December rather than at their January meeting due to its urgency; approval of the application by Council; the cancellation the grant, as the planned destruction of game will not take place following the transfer of all official duties from European staff to the Sudanese.
Also contains a Royal Society application form for a grant of £238 and 16 shillings towards travelling expenses for van Lennep to visit the Royal Veterinary College in London for three weeks, comprising of an air fare from Khartoum and subsistence of £10 a week; extract of the Council agenda relating to the travel expenses application. |
