| Description | Including five illustrations of Kerguelen's landscape and rock formations, includes depictions of:
a section of coast in an area of White's Bay
a birds eye view of Christmas Harbour
the south side of Christmas Harbour
Robertson was Surgeon on HMS Terror, which along with HMS Erebus, took part in Captain James Clark Ross's Antarctic Expeditions, 1839-1843, whose primary mission was to study terrestrial magnetism and locate the South Magnetic Pole, as well as to undertake oceanographic, botanical, and zoological observations. For two months in 1840 the Erebus and Terror stayed at Kerguelen. MM/10/182-186 all date from this period.
With accompanying note: "From the Antarctic Expedition: This packet contains two papers which were ordered by the Council of the Royal Society on the 10th June 1841 to be deposited in the Iron Chest of the Society. The papers are entitled 1. Geological Remarks on Kerguelen's Land and 2. Catalogue of Geological Specimens" |
