TitleLetter from Charles Morgan Elliot, Singapore to Humphrey Lloyd
Date15 March 1842
DescriptionDiscussion on the work Elliot is conducting at the Singapore observatory. Discussion on the method of correcting the magnets for temperature being similar to the formula Lloyd provided for the coefficient of temperature. Elliot is anxious to prove this formula and to see if he can adopt it. Elliot discusses the temperature of his observatory and the affect this has on the magnets. Captain [John Theophilus] Boileau has sent Elliot two observations corrected.

Discussion on the vertical force instrument, and comparisons to the vertical force curves at the Simla and Madras [Chennai] observatories. Elliot notes the time of vibration in the vertical and horizontal plane. Discussion on the magnetism of the horizontal force. Elliot discusses the magnetic movements of the declination and horizontal force, and the total magnetic intensity. Elliot describes the experiments intends to conduct.

Elliot describes his intentions to obtain the dip by vibrating the needle in vertical and horizontal planes.

Elliot informs Lloyd that he has sent his observations to the Cape of Good Hope and Van Diemen’s Land [Tasmania; Lutruwita or Truwana] observatories. Discussion on the similarities of observations with the [Thiruvananthapuram] Trivandrum, Simla and Madras observatories.
