Title | Letter from Charles James Buchanan Riddell, Woolwich to Humphrey Lloyd |
Date | 29 December 1843 |
Description | Riddell arrived from Dresden a fortnight ago. [Edward] Sabine advised not to print the instructions for the portable apparatus until Riddell’s return.
Riddell has rewritten the instructions for calculating the experiment of deflection and argues that the values of coefficient should be calculated from the results of experiments. Discussion on obtaining values at a fixed observatory. Riddell would like Lloyd to look over the instructions [not enclosed] and note any suggestions, in particular relating to the definition of the coefficients. Riddell asks Lloyd if the coefficients can be called constant coefficients depending on the distribution of the free magnetism of both the deflecting and suspended magnets. The instructions compiled by Riddell are based on this principle, therefore he is anxious to get this confirmed before they are published. Discussion on the practical rules or formula. |
