| Description | Riddell has written to Colonel [?] and to [Philip] Melvill (Military Secretary to the East India Company), to update them that the small instruments at the Indian observatories all require new portable unifilar magnets, and the Bombay observatory requires a new induction inclinometer. Riddell asks Lloyd if he is happy with substituting an eight inch circle divided by 12 or rather to decimals of a minute, and sending an induction inclinometer similar to the one they saw at Cambridge.
Riddell discusses his belief that [Samuel] Jones will now improve the collimators.
The induction inclinometer has considerably improved as much as the unifilar. The Madras Observatory was provided with an earlier two bar instrument therefore will not require a new one. Riddell informs that the Simla observatory would need a new instrument, however Colonel [?] has informed him that the observatory is to be abolished. Riddell hopes that the officer at the station will be able to prevent this.
Riddell heard from [Lieutenant] Strange recently with reference to Charlemont Fort, and thanks Lloyd for his kindness to Strange. Riddell informs Lloyd that they have heard nothing in regard to the continuance of the government observations. [Edward] Sabine returned from the 'continent' a week ago but has heard nothing on this matter. Sir George [Murray] is not likely to take steps in this matter. |
