| Description | Eardley-Wilmot is sending Lloyd the observations of vibration of the vertical force in the vertical plane [not enclosed]. Suggestion to reject the first observation, it is only included to show the mistake made in copying out the value. Eardley-Wilmot asks for Lloyd’s method of proceeding in vibrating this magnet. The temperature experiment for the vertical force magnet appears indefinite. The apparent declination is affected by the size of the arc in which the magnet swings, and discussion on varied results. Eardley-Wilmot describes how he made a copper apparatus himself. Discussion on the horizontal force instrument. Eardley-Wilmot informs Lloyd that an officer from 'HMS Terror' was at the Cape of Good Hope a few days ago in the 'Cornwallis', on his way to China. |
