Children refers to a letter to the Duke of Sussex from John Herapath [MS/123/13]. Children thinks the timing of Herapath's letter suggests 'some secret machinations'. Children states that he thinks it important that the reply is carefully written and that the Duke be wholly content with it, to avoid exposing the Duke to attacks by Herapath. He states that he encloses a draft letter for the Duke to consider.
He reports that Mr Reynaud is willing to serve on the Council of the Royal Society and that Mr D[avies] Gilbert has accepted the Duke's invitation to dinner on 29 [November?], if he is not prevented by the ill-health of his family. Gilbert's only son has broken his arm and three of his four daughters are ill with measles, with the son also possibly sickening with the same disease.
Children expects to write to the Duke again on Friday, after the election of the auditors. He notes that Mr Lubbock has received the money due from the British Museum.
An extra paragraph, written upside down on the first page of the letter, refers to paragraphs 4 and 6 of Statute [correctly, Chapter] 6 of the Royal Society, which concern the ballot for election of new members, and their admission. Children notes that these paragraphs do not show by whose authority ballots are issued. |
