Description | Two-monthly report of the superintendents of exploration. There was no report sent at the end of September due to the meeting of the British Association occuring at that time. At the end of August, they were engaged in the excavation of Smerdon's Gallery and this work continued throughout October. The deposit found within is of ordinary cave-earth, with a fragments of limestone, old stalagmite, quartz pebbles, red grit, and flint. Items found include: '524 teeth of hyena, 474 of horse, 292 of rhinoceros,' 39 of deer, '32 each of bear and elephant, 19 of fox, 12 of lion', 8 of wolf, '7 of rein-deer, 3 of rabbit, and 1 of dog(?)'. Containing a sketch of what is presumed to be a bone implement (No. 3428). [NOTE: this report has been bound incorrectly.
