TitleReport on Casiquiari Picture Writing, by Richard Spruce
Date1 February 1863
DescriptionRecounts travels along the Casiquiari [in the Guyana highlands] in December 1853 and discovery of several instances of picture writing. Describes examples of picture-writing (sketches marked 'A' through 'H') and, with the help of his local crew, speculates as to their meaning with varying degrees of certainty. Upon returning to the area in January 1854, at the mouth of the Cano Calipo, he describes additional instances of picture-writing ('G'). Describes most detailed example of picture-writing he has encountered, engraved by a young woman, lamenting the death of her mother. Discusses possible 'date and mode of execution of the picture-writing'. Reflects upon the nature of time to 'savage people'. Written in Piura, Peru.
