| Description | Featherstonehaugh has just received Buckland's letter about Mantell and Cuvier and he has written to Gideon Mantell. He is uncertain about his arrangements until the arrival of Straton [Joseph Straton, originally Muter (1780-1840)]. If Mantell wishes to see him personally, he will voyage to Brighton as he wishes to visit Dieppe and Rouen. General Straton has other preferences. Featherstonehaugh is unable to say what should happen with the shells,as he has no list or catalogue from 'Mr South Sea Sketchbury'. He should be able to arrange with Cuvier a proper way of having the chalks conveyed and Mantell may contact him in Paris. He provides a recipe for cleaning corals. Mrs Murchison has been seen by Mrs Featherstonehaugh; Murchison and Sedgwick are in Scotland. It is provoking that Sketchbury does not come since Featherstonehaugh's minerals are not all packed up and therefore he cannot give further information on Buckland's things. He intends to 'take a last peep at the tunnel' and he will write again before he goes.
In a postscript, Featherstonehaugh notes that Sketchbury has arrived and he sends a catalogue made by his brother to Buckland. He states that he has made some exchanges, including a lot that Mrs Buckland may wish to polish for fruit dishes. A copy of sale lot numbers and prices is appended. |
