Description | Hennessey informs Sabine he has settled in India and expresses his ‘willingness to undertake’ their scientific experiment. Description of where Mussoorie and [Dehradun] are situated. Describes the climate of Mussoorie and [Dehradun], and living part of the time in Mussoorie and [Dehradun]. Informs Sabine he is in charge of the ‘computing office of the great trigonometrical survey of India’ from Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. Hennessey notes the rest of the time is entirely his own and he would like to devote it to scientific pursuits as directed by Sabine. Describes his skills and training in working with ‘delicate’ instruments and mathematical readings. Informs he is able to take ‘frequent’ observations at Mussoorie between March and October when he is resident there. Discussion regarding the ‘peculiar’ advantageous position Hennessey has and discusses the use of instruments. Refers to Sabine’s wish for Hennessey to take observations with two thermometers, with one exposed to the sun’s rays and one in the shade, which he has now commenced. Informs Sabine that Captain James Palladio] Basevi is ‘proceeding satisfactorily with the pendulum observations’. |
