Title | Copy of a letter from Edward Sabine, Hastings to [Francis] Beaufort |
Date | 11 January 1850 |
Description | Sabine sends Beaufort a letter from [Johan Georg] Forchhammer in which he mentions ‘specimens of sea water from the Antarctic seas’ would be valuable to him. Forchhammer asks officers of the British government to obtain them for him, and refers to no ships going to the Antarctic ocean at present. Sabine suggests if [James Clark] Ross has specimens he wishes to get analysed then ‘he could not possibly do better’ than to entrust them to Forchhammer. Refers to Forchhammer’s experiments regarding the ‘maximum density of the pure water of the ocean’ dependant on the temperature. |
