| Description | At the annual meeting of the Royal Society on 7 June [1849], Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort announced that the American government had undertaken to sent an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. A vote of thanks was suggested by Sir Charles Lemon and Lord Northampton, and was agreed by the Royal Society. Expresses the thanks of the Royal Society and hopes this will bring the two nations closer together and the USA will continue to progress rapidly 'in the arts of peace and civilisation'. |
