TitleNotification by Secretaries of the Royal Society of the action which Officers of the Royal Society intend proposing to the Council regarding the situation following the resignation of Professor Gregory
Date7 June 1901
DescriptionWritten from the Royal Society, Burlington House, W

The regular course would be that the Executive Committee should nominate, for the approval of the Joint Antarctic Committee, a successor to Professor Gregory, but such a course would entail a delay which, under existing circumstances, would be most undesirable.

The Officers of the Royal Society accordingly intednnto propose to the Council the following;

That the President and Council of the Royal Society should invite the President and Council of the Royal Geographical Society to join with them in appointing Mr G Murray, of the British Museum, as Director of the Civilian Scientific Staff, in place of Professor Gregory, resigned. Mr Murray has been acting as Deputy-Director, and had undertaken to proceed as far as Melbourne with the Expedition. It is intended that Mr Murray should be the actual Director, but should not proceed with the ship to the ice; he would leave the ship at Melbourne and subsequently carry out the duties of Director in a manner to be hereafter determined. Meanwhile he would , as Director, make, in conjunction with Commander Scott, in accordance with regulations, such appointments in the Civilian Scientific Staff as may be necessary.

We may add that, should the above proposal prove acceptable, it will be desirable to refer back the "Instructions" as drawn up by the Special Committee of Six, for amendment in accordance with the changed conditions
