The instructions detail the scientific staff that the director is responsible for, and explains what will happen to the scientific data collected. Details of the research programme and observations to be made are outlined in the expedition commander's instructions, a copy of which was provided to the scientific director as well. The document includes placeholders for the signatures of the Presidents of the Royal Society and Royal Geographical Society, as well as the six members of the Special Committee.
