Title | Letter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Date | 9 November 1901 |
Description | Has been thinking about the difficult issue of [George Robert Milne] Murray. States that Murray left the ship on good terms with everyone aboard, including [Robert Falcon] Scott. But Scott's letter shows 'they must have been glad to get rid of him as working member of the expedition'. Markham believes 'that Scott was divided between friendship for the man; and a wish to get rid of a member of the expedition who had turned out not to be of the use that was expected'. Murray's reason for coming home is to help with the second ship, and 'has a wild idea of going out in her himself as chief person'. Markham notes that it is still uncertain whether they will raise the money for the relief ship, and Murray was not appointed for such a purpose regardless. |
