Title | Letter from William Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, to the Treasurer [Alfred Bray Kempe] |
Creator | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Date | 12 November 1901 |
Description | Discussing [Clements] Markham's letter appealing for money for the relief ship. Huggins notes that 'Markham's use of the word "crime" though very unfortunate, was made thoughtlessly, in his anxiety to give force to his appeal'. Huggins suggests Kempe call on him and explain that this wording could be amended to avoid causing further irritation. The relief ship had always been planned, and the Royal Society will express approval of the Royal Geographical Society's plans, 'leaving it to individual Fellows to subscribe or not, as they may wish'. Suggests inviting the King to the May Soiree, rather than organising a dinner which might bore the King. Is 'sorry that McClean cannot serve; Turner who had 6 votes would do very well'.
With a manuscript postscript, noting that [Lazarus] Fletcher has told Huggins that the reason for [George Robert Milne] Murray's return is because he would not have been able to get back from New Zealand within his agreed leave of absence. |
