Title | Draft letter from A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe, 10 Porchester Square, Hyde Park, to Sir William Huggins |
Creator | Kempe; Sir; Alfred Bray (1849-1922) |
Date | 15 November 1901 |
Description | Has consulted [Michael] Foster and he agrees that Kempe 'should not be the person to tackle Markham about his circular' [soliciting funds for the relief ship]. Since the only Antarctic Committee currently sitting is the Antarctic Finance Committee, Kempe has found himself in regular contact with Markham over Antarctic difficulties beyond purely financial matters. Kempe worries that if he intervenes over the wording of Markham's appeal, it will give the impression 'that the general responsiblity of the Royal Society in Antarctic matters, and particularly for keeping Sir Clements Markham within proper bounds, rests on my shoulders'. Kempe does not want to disrupt the harmony of the Finance Committee, pointing out that 'It would be very awkward for me to have to be continually sitting on a small committee with a man whom I had asked to withdraw and apologise for a statement he has publicly made'. |
