Title | Draft letter from A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe, 10 Porchester Square, Hyde Park, to Professor [Jown Walter] Gregory |
Creator | Kempe; Sir; Alfred Bray (1849-1922) |
Date | 30 December 1901 |
Description | Apologies for his delayed reply to Gregory's letter, but this was due to awaiting [George Robert Milne] Murray's return to England. Murray was unwell, causing a further delay. Kempe has spoken with [Sir Clements] Markham about the pendulum matter. He handed this over to [Robert Falcon] Scott in December 1900, but remembers that Gregory told him the plan of gettng the pendulums from Melbourne had been given up. Scott told Markham in May that they had decided to take the pendulums from Kew.
Kempe includes a transcription of Murray's letter on the matter [see MS/547/1/156], who believed that any decision had been taken in consultation with Gregory and concluded there must have been a genuine misunderstanding.
Kempe hopes Gregory had an opportunity to discuss the matter with [Louis] Bernacchi when he was at Melbourne, and if any expense has been incurred by the Observatory then this should be settled by those responsible. |
